What type of starter jewelry is best for a tragus piercing?

Written by Jewelry on February 5, 2010

I’ve seen that a lot of people get their tragus pierced with a CBR, but I recently read experiences from people saying that a CBR makes the tragus heal slower. There were also opinions on the material of the original jewelry. So, what material* and what type of jewelry is best for the initial tragus piercing?

*NOTHING that contains nickel, I’m a seriously allergic.

I have my tragus pierced!!! I am also INSANELY allergic to nickel. Here is exactly how my piercing went down. I got a CBR made of grade 23 titanium, which is surgical grade and contains absolutely NO NICKEL!! The CBR is better for healing because if you look at a lot of pictures of a tragus piercing those who get it done with a straight barbell tend to get a red bump, maybe a keloid maybe just from irritation but they end up with a hypertrophic scar, which doesn’t look good. With the cbr mine had no such bump or ring around it and it looks amazing now. Also, when you get a CBR it doesn’t get as irritated and is soooo much easier to clean around so you don’t irritate the piercing when you are cleaning it. Also, when it’s towards the end of healing, you can but in headphones with a CBR with a barbell you can’t.

Just some random stuff for aftercare, what I did was I went to claire’s and got some ear care solution as well as got some non-iodized sea salt from the grocery story. What I would do is in the morning before I would leave for school I would get a q-tip and quickly put a little ear care solution on to hold me over until I got home. Then in the evening after my shower I would soak two cotton balls in a sea salt solution and I would put one in my ear and hold the other against the front of my tragus but not applying pressure and would hold that for maybe ten minutes. Then get just a wet cotton ball and gently wipe off the excess salt water. Then put on a little more ear care solution and that’s it.

Random jewelry thing, after it is healed, if you don’t like the look of a CBR I would advise to get nose screws with whatever on them that you are looking for because that way you can have a stud and you can still wear any kind of headphones without irritating it, that’s what I do and it looks cute too.

So sorry for rambling, I just remember thinking exactly what you are and I felt like sharing EVERYTHING so as to possibly dismiss all of your questions.

Well, a traditional stud or even a "Sleeper" ring could certainly work. As for what to make it out of, gold tends to be hypoallergenic and surgical steel is usually a safe choice.

i haven’t heard of an ear piercing done with anything other than surgical stainless steel. tragus’s are pierced with cbrs, barbells or labret (lip) studs. no reputable piercer will pierce with anything that has nickel in it.

Most piercings should be pierced with a barbell, including a tragus. A CBR or other ring will move around a lot and cause irritation, delaying healing. A barbell, on the other hand, should stay mostly still.

You want to use stainless steel or titanium in your healing jewelry, as those materials have the greatest resistance to bacteria. Nickel isn’t very good for just about any piercing.
