What is the difference between rhinestone and crystal jewelry? Sometimes it looks the same if stones are clear?
Written by Jewelry on March 30, 2010If the stones are clear I can’t tell the difference. How do I know which one is which? Is it different for older or costume jewelry? Thanks for your help!

Crystal is the highest quality glass, containing at least 10% lead oxide. It has therefore the best sparkle and durability of all glass varieties. Rhinestones used to be rock quartz, the clear quartz variety, but later it is just a name for all faceted glass, crystal or just glass. The older ‘rhinestone’ jewelry used to be of much higher quality that anything made lately. There are still pieces around that are 180 years old and older and they still sparkle beautifully. The older crystals are usually called ‘paste’. I doubt if you will be able to see a big difference between lead crystal and glass.
