How would you start marketing handmade jewelry?
Written by Jewelry on December 6, 2009My mom makes handmade jewelry out of sterling silver and natural stones, and most recently enamel. She is always receiving complements on her pieces, and has had one bracelet featured in a jewelry magazine, as well as a few pieces in galleries. But she wants to start selling them on a larger basis, how could she start doing that? Does anyone know where she can find a representative? Thanks!
hey, thank you so much for responding, your answers were very helpful!

Since your mom has never had a business before, I would strongly recommend that you both talk to a business counselor before you do anything especially spend money. You have to determine whether you’ll start a web based business or one with a store front. I’d call the local office of SCORE (go to http://www.score.org and input your zip code to find the chapter nearest you), the advice is FREE.
The counselor at SCORE will most likely advise you to write a business plan which is very good advice because it will force you to dig out all of the start up details and the costs of starting a handmade jewelry business and force you to also understand all of the aspects of this business including the customers you’ll concentrate on (your market ) and how you’ll go after them.
You’ll need to register the business with your state controller’s office and make sure that you have any city and county licenses if any are needed where you live. All of this will come out in a business plan.

Good Luck

Rather than trying to find a representative (that could be difficult to find or costly), I would start locally. Take samples to locally owned businesses that might sell that type of jewelery product and see if they would be interested in selling it. It could be on a consignment basis. Another option would be to rent a booth at a craft fair or event… there are a lot of Christmas opportunities coming up. Also a website might be a good idea. You could sell online, but it’s also a good marketing tool. That way when you have opportunities to sell or make a sale, you can give out your contact and website to encourage further sales. If you are successful on a smaller scale, it will probably naturally progress and new opportunities will come along to expand. Good luck!

Well my suggestionn would be start on ebay. There it will sel at auction so what the piece would be worth she may get more. Maybe do that a few times and get some income under your belt. hen maybe start a website. Theres plenty of free advertising sites online the wont cost anything to advertise. Google bizzarrs in your area and sell there. Dont do flea markets. If your moms work is that good, dont downgrade it by selling at flea markets.
Host home parties. I sell candles and I know home parties are a real seller. Maybe have her get with someone who does avon or like me and sells candles and when selling, maybe throw in a free gift of avon or a candle. The possibilities are endless.
