copper should have a bronze color to it, gold will have a gold color to it. or you can go to a jeweler and ask them, they usually should do it for free…and no offense, but who the heck wears copper jewelry?

the easiest way to get find out is to take them to a jeweler and find out. they dont normally charge for an appraisel. but simply guessing and then selling something that isnt, is not a good idea. again go to a professional

buy a gold testing kit. They are not that expensive (check eBay). They consist of bottles of acid and a black testing stone. (but if you use eBay, check around — the variances in price are HUGE and everybody’s selling pretty much the same stuff).
So far as avoiding gold-plated or gold-filled jewelry, the only way to do that is to take a very fine file and make a mark on an unobtrusive area. The base metal is often instantly apparent, but if it is not, you can then use your gold testing kit.
whoops, forgot the most obvious test: if it’s magnetic, it is absolutely NOT gold.
