How do I get my jewelry appraised for free?

Written by Jewelry on May 16, 2010

I was given a set of silver & diamond earrings & necklace. I don’t need it. Where I can I get it appraised so I can find out how much to sell it for? A jewelry store at the mall maybe? Is there usually a fee to get jewelry appraised?

Of course there is a fee involved to get jewelry appraised. An appraiser needs to have a lot of training and experience plus has to spend quite some time for market research to be able to give a valid appraisal. No-one works for free these days.

If you want to get an idea what your jewelry could sell for, you can check out sites like ebay.com, rubylane.com, etsy.com to find out what similar pieces sell for. You can also measure the size of the diamonds and calculate their weight and go on diamond selling sites to find out what color/clarity the stones approx. are. You can use your loupe and check out stones and settings and put the jewelry on your scales to find out the weight of the pieces. The current metal prices are available online, you can work out the scrap metal value of your jewelry.
    Cheers
