Yes you’re right most of the high rankers were never on the front line, and their ranks were achieved by status.
And yes, frontline soldiers rarely get to the top, but still they eventually do. And end their careers thankful and full of pride that they got through. Some even asking for more. They’re the good commanders

The officers admirals and generals in colonial wars, world war 1 and 2 never had to fight in their life they got their because of their social status and it continues today. The real soldiers in the frontline rarely get to the top.

Yes, some do come back from wars with post-traumatic stress, they didn’t have the mental capability to handle certain situations. There are no words i can say to make them better,but i will always thank and feel for them.
But to those that do have the capabilities to handle war-time situations, they move up in ranks, become our admirals, generals, etc.
