    You’re right about the height. It is easier if it’s correct prior to soldering. But if it isn’t, then filing and sanding it down in place is a useful trick. Either way gets you to the same end result.

    I always cut out the backs of my settings, unless the stone’s ugly below. It shows off the stone, lightens the piece, and saves on expensive material.

    Your bezel should already be the correct height when soldering it to the plate.
    using a file in the manner shown is archaic
    Use a bench block.. it’s faster and more accurate. your bezel is too tall. the bezel edge should JUST capture the stone. leaving the maximum amount of the stone showing.
    Glad to see you cut out the back. Filled in backs hide too much of the stone

    you should check the bezal silver before you solder it to the plate. also it is the look of the stone, that your going for 2 to 3 is a good start but there other thing to concider
